St Guinefort : Comment ce chien est devenu un saint
Tout au long de l’histoire, les gens ont vénéré des saints locaux et non officiels plutôt intéressants, il n’est donc pas surprenant que les chiens aient été associés à la sainteté. Nous avons saint Assise, qui pouvait converser avec les loups. Saint Roch, le saint patron des chiens et des amoureux des chiens, avait un chien fidèle qui, disait-on, l’avait guéri de la peste. On dit que saint Christophe Cynocéphale avait en fait une tête de chien, et il est représenté de cette façon sur les icônes de Russie et de Grèce. Cela est probablement dû à une mauvaise transcription du mot Cananeus (qui signifie « de Canaan ») en canineus (« semblable à un chien »).
Cependant, saint Guinefort du XIIIe siècle était littéralement un chien (plus précisément, un lévrier) et un saint patron des enfants. Sa fête est célébrée le 22 août.
L'histoire de ce saint est bien connue, et a également été attribuée à divers chiens fidèles au cours de l'histoire, comme le chien du XIIIe siècle nommé Gelert, qui a défendu un bébé contre un loup (qui serait enterré dans le village de Beddgeler au Pays de Galles). Des motifs similaires apparaissent dans les Fables d'Ésope , l'histoire victorienne de Jock du Bushveld et La Belle et le Clochard de Disney.
Quant au lévrier Guinefort, l'histoire raconte qu'un noble l'a laissé dans la crèche avec son fils en bas âge. Lorsque l'homme est revenu, le berceau était renversé et l'enfant avait disparu. Le chien a couru dessusLe noble conclut précipitamment que le chien avait attaqué son fils. Il tira son épée et tua Guinefort. Ce n'est qu'après avoir tué le chien que l'homme trouva son enfant vivant et en bonne santé sous le lit renversé, à côté du corps d'un serpent venimeux mortel que Guinefort avait tué pour protéger l'enfant. Le noble regretta son acte et prit le chien et l'enterra dans un puits qu'il recouvrit de pierres. Plus tard, un sanctuaire dédié à Guinefort fut établi là où le chien aurait été enterré, et les enfants y furent amenés pour être immunisés contre les maladies ou pour être guéris par divers rituels, comme le passage de bébés nus entre les troncs d'arbres. Les historiens disent que Guinefort le saint chien a pris le nom de n'importe quel saint humain antérieur du même nom, mais dont on sait très peu de choses, sauf qu'il fut exécuté en étant tiré de nombreuses flèches. On ne sait pas exactement comment il s'est transformé en lévrier, mais de telles confusions et transformations ne sont pas rares dans l'histoire des saints. L'histoire du chien Gelert (voir ci-dessus) est également confondue avec celle d'un saint gallois ermite du VIIe siècle (humain) du même nom. Certains historiens pensent que Guinefort, le chien saint, aurait pu servir de couverture à l'utilisation d'un puits de guérison païen.
En tout cas, l'Église catholique n'a pas été amusée par Guinefort. En 1262, l'inquisiteur Étienne de Bourbona exigé que les restes du chien soient brûlés et que le sanctuaire et les arbres environnants soient complètement détruits. L'Église a décrété que quiconque se rendrait sur le site de l'ancien sanctuaire verrait tous ses biens saisis et vendus. Malgré cette menace, le sanctuaire a continué à recevoir des visiteurs subreptices – certains historiens affirment que le sanctuaire a été utilisé jusqu'au 19ème siècle, même jusque dans les années 1930.
L'histoire du chien fidèle dont le comportement courageux est si courageux. tragiquement incompris résonne parmi les gens. Pour les paysans français encore soumis aux caprices de la noblesse, cela représentait peut-être quelque chose de profond sur ce que signifie vivre au service de gens qui ne font pas toujours preuve du meilleur jugement. Un monde où les droits et le statut du lévrier d'un noble étaient souvent bien supérieurs à ceux d'un paysan humain.
Et même l'inquisiteur Etienne de Bourbon a écrit que le sort du noble était le résultat de la « volonté divine » - après l'homme a injustement tué son Greyhound, il a « trouvé son manoir réduit à un désert ». Ainsi, tout en considérant l'hérésie d'un saint chien, Etienne de Bourbon semblait certainement considérer le meurtre injuste d'un bon chien comme un comportement qu'un Dieu juste pourrait punir.
