Les 14 faits sur les expositions canines
1. Les expositions canines existent depuis longtemps
En 1859, une exposition de bétail a eu lieu dans la ville anglaise de Newcastle upon Tyne. Ce n'était pas inhabituel car les expositions de bovins étaient courantes, mais celle-ci avait une particularité : après l'exposition, des groupes de chiens de chasse (en grande partie des braques et des setters) étaient présentés, le propriétaire des meilleurs chiens recevant des armes en guise de prix.

On pense que la première exposition canine sur le sol américain a été organisée dans les années 1870 à New York. Comme la plupart des choses qui ont été créées au cours de l’histoire, elle a été conçue pour empêcher un groupe d’hommes de se disputer entre eux.
Avant que les expositions ne soient organisées, les propriétaires de chiens de sport se réunissaient et racontaient des histoires sur les prouesses de leurs chiens. Ces événements devenaient assez houleux car chaque propriétaire insistait sur le fait que son chien était le meilleur garçon de tous. Finalement, il a fallu régler le débat une fois pour toutes, et la première exposition canine est née.
3. La plupart des expositions canines sont divisées en sept catégories
Ces catégories sont les chiens de troupeau, les chiens de sport, les chiens non sportifs, les chiens de chasse, les chiens de compagnie, les terriers et les chiens de travail. Chaque groupe est rempli de races différentes qui correspondent au titre de la catégorie. Ces chiens ont tous remporté le titre de « Meilleur de la race » lors d’autres expositions canines et ont été admis à la compétition nationale, où ils concourront pour le titre de « Meilleur du groupe » et (s’ils remportent le titre de « Meilleur du groupe ») éventuellement, de « Meilleur de l’exposition ».
Toutes les races ne sont cependant pas acceptées dans ces expositions, même si elles entrent dans l’une des sept catégories. La liste des races acceptées varie d’une année à l’autre, de nouvelles races étant ajoutées en permanence.

ChaqueL'animal est jugé selon le standard de la race, qui est la description théorique de la représentation idéale de la race. Le standard n'est pas non plus à la discrétion du juge, car les critères sont clairement écrits à l'avance.
Ainsi, si un Schnauzer bat un Rottweiler pour le « Meilleur de l'exposition », cela ne signifie pas nécessairement que le Schnauzer est un meilleur chien. Cela signifie simplement que le Schnauzer est plus proche de répondre à toutes les caractéristiques qui composent le standard de la race (et il y en a beaucoup) que le Rottie.
5. Chaque animal est jugé sur 14 attributs différents
Qu'est-ce qui constitue un standard de race ? Il existe 14 qualités différentes que les juges sont formés pour rechercher. Ceux-ci incluent la taille et la forme de la tête du chien, la structure générale de sa queue, ainsi que la texture et la longueur de son pelage. Même la longueur et l'épaisseur de leurs moustaches sont jugées !
De plus, vous êtes-vous déjà demandé pourquoi les personnes qui montrent les chiens doivent les faire courir autour du ring ? C’est ainsi que le juge peut inspecter la démarche du chien, l’un des 14 attributs sur lesquels les chiens sont classés. 7. Ce n'est pas toujours un jeu réservé aux jeunes chiens.

Vous pouvez inscrire des chiens de tout âge dans la plupart des expositions, et s'ils constituent le meilleur exemple du standard de la race, votre chiot plus âgé remportera la couronne sur tous les jeunes whippersnappers (et jeunes Whippets).

9. Toutes les races ne sont pas également bonnes pour remporter des expositions canines
Il existe de nombreuses races qui n'ont jamais remporté le titre de « Meilleur de l'exposition » à la célèbre exposition canine de Westminster. Il s'agit notamment des races préférées des fans comme le Dogue Allemand, le Golden Retriever, le Labrador Retriever, le Rottweiler et le Chihuahua.
Vous voulez savoir sur lesquelles parier ? Les terriers sont toujours des choix judicieux, ayant remporté la première place 34 fois dans l’histoire de la série. Les Wire Fox Terriers sont la meilleure race individuelle sur laquelle investir votre argent, car ils ont remporté le prix « Best in Show » 14 fois, plus que toute autre race.

La plupart des personnes qui exposent des chiens le font comme passe-temps, mais malgré cela, cela est largement limité à ceux qui peuvent se le permettre. L'achat d'un chien digne d'une exposition peut facilement coûter 5 000 $ ou plus, sans compter le soin apporté à la création d'un champion : dressage, toilettage et alimentation de haute qualité.
La participation à des concours est relativement bon marché, car la plupart coûtent moins de 100 $, mais il y en a tellement que ces coûts peuvent s'additionner. Certains chiens participent jusqu'à 15 expositions par mois,et de nombreux propriétaires ne s'arrêtent pas là. Certains annoncent leurs chiens dans des magazines spécialisés, dans l'espoir que cela leur donnera un avantage au moment de la compétition, puisque la plupart des juges lisent les métiers.
11. Les gens dans le ring avec les chiens sont rarement les propriétaires.
La plupart des personnes que vous voyez montrer les chiens sont des maîtres-chiens professionnels. Ils sont embauchés par les propriétaires pour présenter leurs chiens sous le meilleur jour (c'est une autre dépense que vous devrez payer : les maîtres-chiens professionnels peuvent coûter plus de 700 $ par exposition).

Certains éleveurs protègent leurs chiens et veulent que certains aient leur mot à dire sur ce que les chiens sont nourris et comment ils sont dressés, tandis que d'autres veulent obtenir des droits de reproduction sur l'animal une fois leur carrière d'exposition terminée. 13. Les expositions canines ne sont pas que des concours de beauté canine.
Beaucoup de gens considèrent les expositions canines comme étant l’équivalent du concours Miss America, mais la plupart des gens ne gagnent pas beaucoup d’argent en y participant. Les cagnottes ne sont pas si importantes et les expositions donnent généralement beaucoup d'argent à de bonnes causes, comme l'ASPCA.
La plupart des expositions canines organisent des événements complémentaires qui se déroulent en même temps, comme des compétitions d'agilité. ou des épreuves d'obéissance. Ceux-ci sont conçus pour récompenser tous les chiens pour leur travail acharné et leur athlétisme, pas seulement ceux qui se conforment aux normes restrictives de la race.
