Mon chien est-il chatouilleux ? Émotions, réflexes et Réponses
Nous connaissons tous la sensation hilarante mais tourmentée d’être chatouillé. Et même si nous passons une bonne partie de notre temps à caresser le ventre de notre animal de compagnie, nous ne pouvons que nous demander : les chiens sont-ils chatouilleux ? Vous n’êtes pas la première personne à poser cette question. En fait, certaines personnes jurent avoir vu leurs chiens rire à cause de cela, et Charles Darwin a même lancé le bal avec ce sujet de recherche.1 Alors, les chiens sont-ils chatouilleux ? Oui, mais pas de la même manière que nous le ressentons.
Définition du chatouillement
Il est essentiel de définir d’abord la question évidente mais insaisissable de ce qu’est le rire, car être chatouillé est suivi d’un rire incontrôlable. Merriam-Webster définit le chatouillement comme une réponse à « ... l’excitation des nerfs superficiels et à la cause d’un malaise, d’un rire ou de mouvements spasmodiques ». Les scientifiques appellent ce toucher léger knismesis. Il décrit la sensation physique que vous ressentez et peut être comparé à la chair de poule et à ce frisson singulier dans votre colonne vertébrale.
Vous pouvez associer le chatouillement à son autre terme, la gargalèse. Il s'agit de knismesis sous stéroïdes, où vous riez hystériquement à cause de cette sensation. Knismesis suggère quelque chose d'instinctif, tandis que gargalèse semble être quelque chose de complètement différent. La différence est essentielle car elle clarifie les différents sentiments et émotions.

Pour mettre le chatouillement en perspective, il est utile de discerner ce queles chiens peuvent expérimenter et comment cela s’inscrit dans ce contexte. Les chercheurs estiment que le répertoire émotionnel d’un chien est similaire à celui d’un enfant de 2,5 ans. Cela signifie qu'ils sont capables de ressentir les émotions suivantes :
Ces sentiments montrent qu'ils sont capables d'éprouver quelque chose qui s'apparente à des chatouilles et à des rires. Il convient de noter que ces émotions sont à la fois polarisées et extrêmement positives. Il y a de fortes chances que vous associiez le rire à des moments heureux plutôt qu’à des moments stressants. Cependant, la capacité émotionnelle des chiens ne s’arrête pas là.
Réponses canines
Les scientifiques ont découvert un large spectre de réponses. Les chiens peuvent faire la distinction entre les émotions positives et négatives. Une étude a montré que les chiens pouvaient interpréter nos émotions de manière bimodale ou de deux manières. C’est la preuve d’un traitement plus élevé. Néanmoins, nos animaux de compagnie ont appris une chose ou deux en cohabitant avec nous pendant tant de siècles.

Les chatouilles impliquent de rire. Les scientifiques ont documenté ce qui semble être une réaction véritablement canine aux chatouilles. Ce n’est pas le rugissement du ventre que nous exprimons. Au lieu de cela, il est facile de le confondre avec un haletant et de le discerner une fois que vous savez quoi écouter lorsque vous chatouillez votre animal. La recherche a également révélé une réponse positive chez les chiots qui montreraient vraisemblablement une réaction instinctive en l'entendant.
Bien sûr, les chiens varient dans la façon dontils sont chatouilleux et à quel point les différentes parties du corps sont sensibles à cette action. Certains endroits susciteront certainement une réponse, notamment le cou, les côtés et les oreilles. L'hôpital vétérinaire de Caroline Springs suggère également que les chiens ont les pattes sensibles. Cela peut expliquer pourquoi certains animaux rechignent lorsque vous essayez de leur couper les ongles. Ça chatouille !
Le réflexe de grattage
La réponse qui amène probablement la plupart des propriétaires de chiens à se demander si leurs animaux sont chatouilleux est ce qu'on appelle le réflexe de grattage. Vous connaissez la recette : vous frottez le ventre de votre chiot et ses pattes commencent à bouger. Vous pensez peut-être que vous touchez le point idéal de votre chien ou que vous le chatouillez. La science propose une explication différente, quoique moins amusante : il s'agit d'une réaction instinctive à une sorte d'irritation environnementale.
Pensez à un insecte rampant le long de votre jambe et à votre réponse automatique. Vous frappez la cause inconnue pour l'enlever avant qu'elle ne puisse vous mordre. Votre chien fait la même chose lorsque vous lui grattez le ventre. Le neurophysiologiste anglais Sir Charles Sherrington a décrit ce comportement il y a plus de 100 ans. Il a identifié quatre étapes de la réponse, dont les suivantes :

La douleur est l’exemple classique. D'autres sens, comme l'olfaction, sont phasiques. Votre corps le reconnaît immédiatement, le catégorise,et le rejette si ce n’est pas une menace. Le réflexe de grattage chez les chiens ressemble à ce schéma s'il s'accompagne de fatigue.
Réflexions finales
La recherche a montré que les chiens peuvent ressentir des chatouilles même si ce n'est pas le cas. Ce n'est pas le même sentiment que nous. Nos animaux de compagnie peuvent réagir à la sensation. Ils peuvent aussi rire si leur corps l’interprète de cette façon. Le réflexe de grattage semble similaire mais constitue une réponse différente. Chatouiller et rire peuvent impliquer une action émotionnelle, alors que cette dernière est plus instinctive malgré les mouvements et secousses que nos chiens peuvent manifester.
