Hommage à Ted Rheingold et Betty Liddick – Un hommage à Dogster
Les marques Dogster et Catster ont une très longue histoire. Les magazines Cat Fancy et Dog Fancy , qui existent depuis 50 ans, ont fusionné avec les sites Web Dogster.com et Catster.com il y a quatre ans pour devenir le Dogster et Catster et les sites Web. De très nombreuses personnes ont travaillé sur ces marques – Cat Fancy , Dog Fancy , Catster et Dogster – et compte tenu de leur cœurs et âmes pour créer un espace, que ce soit imprimé ou en ligne, où les amoureux des chiens et des chats peuvent former une communauté, se réunissant pour partager des histoires et des photos sur les membres de leur famille à fourrure bien-aimée et en apprendre davantage sur les dernières informations en matière de soins et de comportement.
Honorer Ted Rheingold
L'une de ces personnes très importantes est Ted Rheingold, décédé à l'âge de 47 ans des suites d'un cancer, et nous aimerions lui rendre hommage ici. En 2003, Ted a cofondé un site communautaire en ligne pour les amoureux des chiens, puis des chats, appelé - vous l'aurez deviné - Dogster et Catster . C’était révolutionnaire à bien des égards. Pas de surprise.
« C'était un véritable innovateur », déclare mon amie et ancienne collègue Janine Kahn McCaffrey, rédactrice fondatrice de Catster et Dogster . "Il a lancé Dogster et Catster pour offrir aux gens ce qu'ils n'avaient pas auparavant : un endroit en ligne pour se connecter et parler de leurs animaux de compagnie - un endroit pour poser des questions sur la santé, mais aussi pourpubliez des bêtises et faites-vous des amis. Elle ajoute que c’était en 2004 et que le Web n’était pas tel que nous le connaissons aujourd’hui. Facebook est né à peu près à la même époque.
Maintenant, j'ai rencontré Ted à plusieurs reprises au cours de ces premières années. J'avais écrit et édité du contenu sur les animaux de compagnie pour la société d'édition mère de Cat Fancy et Dog Fancy et je le voyais lors de différents événements sur les chats et les chiens. Je me souviens de lui comme d'un extraverti avec beaucoup d'énergie.
Même si je n'ai pas eu l'occasion de mieux connaître Ted, j'ai eu le plaisir de faire connaissance avec la merveilleuse équipe éditoriale qu'il a constituée, lorsque nous avons fini par travailler pour la même entreprise il y a quelques années chez Lumina Media. (En 2011, après avoir développé le site communautaire dans une direction plus éditoriale, Ted et son partenaire ont vendu Catster et Dogster à Say Media, une société de médias en ligne, où elle pourrait se développer davantage et Say Media a ensuite vendu Catster et Dogster à Lumina Media.)
Je faisais partie de l'équipe qui a fusionné Cat Fancy et <. 1>Dog Fancy avec Catster et Dogster . J'entendrais beaucoup d'histoires sur Ted et ces débuts de la part de l'équipe éditoriale de « Sters » : Janine, Vicky, Keith, John et Lori (et plus tard Pam), des professionnels passionnés du contenu et de la communauté qui adorent leurs chiens et leurs chats, et qui sont tout simplement des gens vraiment adorables. Ils parlaient de Ted, alors j'avais l'impression que jele connaissais. Je me souviens que Ted était ravi que Dogster et Catster soient imprimés.
Après avoir appris le décès de Ted, j'ai contacté Janine pour nous aider à lui rendre hommage. . Comme on peut s'y attendre, Janine est profondément attristée mais heureuse de partager ses réflexions sur Ted avec la famille Dogster et Catster .
« Ted était une personne incroyable – à parts égales, chaleureux et plein d’esprit – et un véritable visionnaire. J'ai eu tellement de chance de l'avoir comme ami et mentor chez Dogster et j'ai le cœur brisé pour sa famille (Molly, Mabel et Moxie). Il aimait Internet et les médias sociaux et était toujours désireux de créer une communauté et de partager des idées. J'ai relu Season of the Witch , le journal sur le cancer de Ted sur Medium et j'ai vu qu'il terminait ainsi sa première entrée : "Si jamais vous vous demandez ce que vous pourriez faire pour moi, s'il vous plaît, partagez simplement un gif amusant ou une photo de beauté avec moi. Bien qu'il ne soit plus là pour en envoyer un, je suis sûr qu'il aurait adoré savoir que vous en partagiez un avec une personne qui vous tient à cœur en son nom. ”
Portons un « muttini » ou un « cattini » à Ted. Merci beaucoup de faire partie intégrante de la famille Catster et Dogster . Vous nous manquerez.
Hommage à Betty Liddick
Je souhaite rendre hommage à un autre membre de la famille, la rédactrice en chef Betty Liddick. J'ai rencontré Betty lorsqu'elle était rédactrice en chef du magazine Dog Fancy , Dogster 's.« père de chien ». Même si, encore une fois, je n’ai pas travaillé en étroite collaboration avec elle car je travaillais sur d’autres publications sur les animaux de compagnie à l’époque, je me souviens d’elle comme d’une éditrice passionnée et d’une amoureuse des chiens. Betty est ensuite devenue rédactrice en chef du DogWatch de l'Université Cornell, publié par Belvoir Media Group. Curieusement, quelques années après la fusion de Dog Fancy avec Dogster , Belvoir Media Group est devenu la marque et ma maison.
J'étais tellement excité d'être un collègue. de Betty encore ! Malheureusement, avant que j'aie eu la chance de lui tendre la main, Betty est décédée des suites d'une brève maladie. Nous avons tous été choqués.
« Elle avait la passion d'apporter des informations solides à ses lecteurs, estimant que les connaissances et la compréhension d'un propriétaire d'animal contribuaient directement à la santé et au bonheur des animaux qu'elle aimait », fait l'éloge de mon patron et Vice-président du contenu éditorial de Belvoir Media Group, Tim Cole, avec qui Betty a travaillé pendant plusieurs années. « Elle était une professionnelle compétente, une amie fidèle et une figure de proue. Ceux d'entre nous qui ont connu Betty se souviendront d'elle avec beaucoup de tendresse. »
J'ai contacté mon ami et ancien collègue, Steven Biller, qui a travaillé dans l'équipe éditoriale de Betty sur Dog Fancy , puis a repris la direction éditoriale à son départ. Steven dit qu'il a été profondément attristé et choqué d'apprendre son décès. «C'était une rédactrice incroyable et très drôle», me dit-il. « Bettyavait une passion pour les mots et se souciait sincèrement de nos lecteurs et de leurs chiens. Ensemble, nous avons créé un magazine brillant – actif, positif, informatif – qui permet à l'émotion et à l'action d'éclater à travers chaque histoire. Betty était la vraie affaire. Un vrai pro. Elle me manque. »
Betty, je ne peux pas te dire à quel point nous apprécions que tu fasses partie de l’histoire, de notre famille. Vous et Ted avez tant donné et aviez de la passion, du dévouement et un véritable souci pour les personnes et les animaux de compagnie que vous partagiez avec les autres. C'est cette histoire et ces personnes qui ont contribué à faire de Dogster et Catster ce qu'ils sont aujourd'hui.
