Que nous soyons motivés par l'habitude, la nécessité ou la commodité, les humains s'auto-médicamentent tout le temps. Nous avons tous nos propres remèdes traditionnels ou maison pour tout, du rhume aux problèmes digestifs. Parce qu’il existe un grand nombre de médicaments en vente libre facilement disponibles, nous en venons à compter sur des solutions simples et éprouvées. Les chiens, en revanche, ont une chimie corporelle très différente. Leur capacité à digérer et à transformer les aliments humains est différente de la nôtre ; il en va de même pour leur tolérance aux médicaments. Les vétérinaires conviennent universellement que nous ne devrions pas donner de médicaments à usage humain aux chiens ; Y a-t-il des exceptions ?
Si notre estomac est dérangé, nous utilisons la substance rose, le Pepto-Bismol, un remède extrêmement courant et simple contre le reflux acide, la diarrhée et les vomissements. Même lorsque nous savons que nous ne devrions pas le faire, nous partageons bon nombre de nos choses préférées avec nos chiens. Nous les laissons dormir dans nos lits et leur donnons des restes de table au dîner. Lorsque nous voyons nos chiens souffrir de maux de ventre, comme en témoignent des vomissements ou des selles molles, notre esprit se tourne naturellement vers les solutions faciles de l'armoire à pharmacie. Que contient Pepto-Bismol ?
Pepto-Bismol est, bien sûr, un médicament de marque déposée. Comme beaucoup d’autres produits en vente libre – parmi lesquels ChapStick, Band-Aids et Q-Tips –Pepto a acquis une telle réputation que son nom est passé dans le langage courant. Nous faisons intrinsèquement confiance au nom, même si nous ne connaissons peut-être pas ses ingrédients. Sachez donc que l’ingrédient actif du Pepto-Bismol est le même que celui présent dans le kaopectate, un composé chimique appelé sous-salicylate de bismuth.
Le bismuth rose, comme on l'appelle également, a plusieurs fonctions. Il possède des propriétés antiacides et antibactériennes. Il contient également de l'acide salicylique, présent dans l'aspirine et qui peut agir comme anti-inflammatoire. De plus, il supprime une hormone responsable de la diarrhée. Ces propriétés sont toutes utiles pour recouvrir, apaiser et soulager un tube digestif irrité par la diarrhée ou les vomissements. S’il est utilisé chez les chiens, il doit être utilisé avec parcimonie et sous la surveillance ou en consultation du vétérinaire de votre chien.
Est-il sécuritaire de donner du Pepto-Bismol aux chiens ?
Si votre chien vient de commencer à souffrir de diarrhée ou de vomissements, vous souhaitez naturellement l'aider à retrouver une régularité le plus rapidement possible. Vous vous dirigez instinctivement vers l’armoire à pharmacie et attrapez les trucs roses. Passons maintenant aux questions importantes que vous vous posez tous :

Vous voudrez d'abord déterminer si le système digestif d'un chienLes troubles digestifs sont des incidents isolés ou font partie d’un problème plus systématique et plus grave. Si votre chien vient de faire son premier trajet en voiture depuis un certain temps ou a mangé quelque chose qui n’est pas dans son régime alimentaire habituel, les vomissements et la diarrhée sont des réactions corporelles parfaitement naturelles, et un médicament en vente libre contre les maux d’estomac peut aider. S’il y a du sang dans les selles, si le problème persiste depuis plus de quelques jours ou si votre chien prend un médicament sur ordonnance – en particulier un stéroïde comme la prednisone – consultez d’abord votre vétérinaire.

Il existe plusieurs formulations différentes de Pepto-Bismol en vente libre. Une version pour enfants est différente de la formule standard, qui est différente de celle étiquetée « force maximale ». De plus, le dosage approprié pour un Pékinois sera bien plus faible que pour un Dogue allemand ; Cela dépend entièrement de la taille, du poids et de l'état de santé général du chien en question. Étant donné que Pepto contient également un dérivé de l'aspirine, qui peut être toxique pour les chiens et les chats, il est préférable de laisser le dosage et le format à un vétérinaire. Y a-t-il des effets secondaires ?
C'est le risque fondamentald'administrer des médicaments humains à nos animaux de compagnie. Il est préférable d'éviter complètement d'utiliser des médicaments contre les maux d'estomac destinés aux humains sur nos chiens.
Cela dit, les effets secondaires du sous-salicylate de bismuth sur les chiens sont similaires à ceux observés chez les humains, notamment la constipation et les selles noircies. Au-delà de ceux-ci, les effets secondaires du Pepto-Bismol peuvent être pires si votre chien :
- Prend un certain nombre de médicaments sur ordonnance
- A un trouble gastro-intestinal sensible tractus
- Est allergique à l'aspirine
- A déjà reçu un diagnostic de saignement, de coagulation ou de trouble plaquettaire
Solutions naturelles aux problèmes digestifs du chien
Les maux d'estomac, notamment la diarrhée ou les vomissements chez le chien, peuvent souvent être résolus par un changement alimentaire simple et temporaire. Pour les chiens qui vomissent ou expulsent des excréments liquides et aqueux, les vétérinaires recommandent souvent de remplacer le riz blanc et le poulet bouilli par leur nourriture humide ou sèche habituelle. Cette combinaison d’aliments est facile à digérer et à évacuer pour les chiens. Remplacer leurs croquettes ou leur nourriture humide pendant quelques repas ou quelques jours maximum peut aider à rétablir la régularité de leur système digestif.
S'il est vrai que de nombreux aliments destinés aux humains ne sont pas bénéfiques à la digestion d'un chien, cela est principalement dû au fait que nos aliments préférés ont tendance à être sursaturés d'épices, d'assaisonnements et d'arômes artificiels. Ce sont ces additifs, plutôt que les qualités inhérentes des aliments eux-mêmes, qui les rendent difficiles à traiter pour les chiens. Bouillis et préparés simplement, le riz et le poulet désossé ont une texture et une consistance qui peuvent aider à remettre le système digestif d'un chien sur les rails sans aucun des risques liés aux médicaments destinés aux humains.
Si les symptômes persistent, demandez l'aide d'un vétérinaire !
Si votre chien présente des problèmes digestifs pendant plus de deux jours, vous devriez consulter un vétérinaire. N'essayez pas de rationner ou de distribuer des médicaments humains à vos chiens. Même les remèdes en vente libre « sûrs » apparemment inoffensifs peuvent faire des ravages sur le corps d’un chien. Des épisodes prolongés de diarrhée ou de vomissements peuvent provoquer une déshydratation chez le chien, ce qui peut avoir des effets néfastes bien au-delà de simples maux d'estomac.
