Aujourd'hui, nous connaissons les Cocker Spaniels comme des chiots mignons avec des yeux rêveurs, des oreilles adorables et une charmante personnalité. Cependant, à l’origine, ils ont été élevés pour aider les chasseurs à traquer et à récupérer leurs proies, et non pour garder le bétail. Par conséquent, les Cockers Spaniels ne sont pas des chiens de travail ; ce sont plutôt des chiens de sport. S'ils sont en forme, ce sont les plus petits épagneuls sportifs.
Cette race est forte et pleine d'esprit, avec un tempérament enjoué et désireux de plaire. Cela en fait le compagnon idéal pour un chasseur. Cependant, les Cocker Spaniels ne sont pas les seuls chiens à appartenir au groupe sportif. Qu'est-ce qu'un chien de sport ? La définition
L'AKC reconnaît sept groupes de chiens différents, chacun avec son propre objectif.1 La liste comprend les groupes d'élevage, de jouets, de chiens de chasse et de travail. Les chiens de travail étaient spécialement élevés pour tirer de lourdes charrettes et protéger le bétail. Les chiens de sport, en revanche, ont été élevés dans le seul but d'aider les chasseurs à localiser, chasser et récupérer le gibier à plumes. Élevés par des chasseurs qui gagnaient leur vie en tuant et en vendant du gibier, les chiens de chasse peuvent récupérer des oiseaux arrêtés sur terre et dans l'eau.

Pendant des siècles, Les cockers aident les humains à attraper des oiseaux, les premières mentions remontant au 14ème siècle. Ils ont d'abord maîtrisé l'art de localiser et d'effrayer les oiseaux dans des pièges (nids). Lorsque les fusils sont apparus, les Cockers ont appris à les « débusquer » et à exposer la proie à un tir parfait. Grâce à leurs sens aiguisés, leur obéissance et leur nature curieuse, ces chiens sont d'incroyables chasseurs.
Contrairement à la plupart des chiens, les Cocker Spaniels ne sont pas effrayés par un coup de fusil et peuvent à la fois marquer le gibier et livrer l'oiseau mort à leurs propiétaires. À l’origine, ces chiens étonnants ont été élevés par des éleveurs au Royaume-Uni pour chasser la bécasse (d’où le nom de la race). Mais lorsque les cockers sont arrivés aux États-Unis, ils ont été dressés pour chasser la bécasse d'Amérique (des oiseaux légèrement plus petits).
Quels sont les autres types de chiens de sport ?
Si nous décomposons le groupe sportif , on voit qu'il en existe quatre types différents : les setters, les braques, les retrievers et bien sûr les épagneuls. Par exemple, le Boykin Spaniel est un chien qui chasse et récupère, tandis que le Bracco Italiano est une race d'arrêt. La seule chose que tous ces chiens ont en commun est leur origine. Ils ont tous été élevés pour aider les chasseurs à localiser, marquer,débusquer et récupérer le gibier.
Naturellement, les chiens de sport aiment être « sur le terrain » et profiter du frisson de la chasse. Cependant, les retrievers sont les meilleurs nageurs du groupe et ils ont un pelage résistant à l'eau. Donc, si vous chassez la sauvagine, optez pour un retriever. Les épagneuls, les colons et les braques, à leur tour, peuvent être entraînés à chasser le faisan, la caille, la bécasse, le tétras et d'autres oiseaux.

Les chiens de sport sont largement reconnus comme d'incroyables compagnons. Grâce à leur nature dressable, sociable et énergique, ce sont des chiens de famille exceptionnels. Pour la même raison, les chiens de sport sont souvent utilisés comme K9 de service et renifleurs. Mais cela signifie-t-il que vous devriez choisir un Cocker Spaniel comme premier chien ? La réponse pourrait être oui !
Les cockers sont affectueux, amicaux et s’adaptent rapidement aux nouvelles circonstances et environnements. Ils adorent jouer à des jeux comme rapporter (pour récupérer une balle ou un jouet) et sont toujours heureux de rejoindre leurs parents humains pour une promenade, une course ou une randonnée. De cette façon, vous pouvez garder le corps de votre animal en forme. Les cockers n’ont pas besoin de beaucoup d’exercice ; 60 à 90 minutes devraient suffire. Cette race apprend rapidement de nouveaux trucs, mais elle a aussi un cœur sensible.
