Le berger australien est l'une des seules races de chiens à avoir régulièrement un pelage tricolore. Il existe deux mélanges tricolores reconnus, le cuivre noir-blanc et le cuivre rouge-blanc. Un berger australien de couleur unie est en fait rare, l'australien rouge uni étant le plus difficile à trouver.
