Seth Casteel nous parle de son nouveau livre, "Underwater Puppies"
"C'est comme si je vivais dans un film : je suis juste un gars qui adore les chiens", a déclaré le photographe Seth Casteel lorsqu'on lui a demandé s'il était surpris par la popularité généralisée de son livre de 2012 Underwater Dogs . Ce tome représentait une bande de chiens immergés dans une piscine, avec les expressions faciales déformées et farfelues capturées par Seth et son appareil photo alors qu'ils galavanaient. Maintenant, il répète le tour avec Underwater Puppies , un projet de suivi mettant en vedette une meute de chiots exubérants.
Avec la sortie de Underwater Puppies cette semaine, j'ai parlé à Seth sur la dynamique de la prise de vue dans les piscines, comment prendre des photos de votre propre chien subaquatique et comment il y a un message plus profond de sécurité et d'adoption canine derrière ses images saisissantes.
Phillip Mlynar pour Dogster : Pourquoi avez-vous décidé de n'utiliser que des chiots sauvés pour le projet ?
Seth Casteel : L'objectif était de présenter d'incroyables ambassadeurs des chiots sauvés pour rappeler aux gens que l'adoption est une merveilleuse option. Il y a tellement d'animaux de compagnie géniaux qui ont besoin de familles aimantes, et j'espère que les gens envisageront d'amener un animal de refuge dans leur vie.
Avez-vous été tenté de ramener l'un des chiots à la maison après le tournage ?
Toujours !
Quel chien a pris l'eau avec le plus d'enthousiasme ? Et y en avait-il qui avaient vraiment besoin d'être câlinés ?
Un bon nombre de chiots sont devenus fous à cause dude l'eau – deux à mentionner sont Zelda et Reason. Et oui, il y en avait beaucoup qui avaient besoin d’être cajolé. J'ai travaillé avec plus de 1 500 chiots au cours de la réalisation de ce livre, mais la plupart de ces chiots n'ont même pas été photographiés : ils ont juste suivi une brève leçon de natation pour acquérir de la confiance et des compétences en matière de sécurité, puis ils sont rentrés chez eux.
Avez-vous remarqué si certaines races étaient de meilleurs nageurs que les autres ?
Beaucoup de gens me disent que les Labs et les Goldens sont les stars évidentes de la natation, mais ce n'est pas toujours le cas car Je l'ai découvert dans Underwater Dogs . Et il en va de même pour les chiots sous-marins : on ne peut jamais comprendre un chiot !
Quels conseils donneriez-vous à quelqu'un qui tente de prendre des photos de son chien sous l'eau à la maison ?
Tout d’abord et surtout, ne jetez jamais votre chien dans la piscine. Cela peut être dangereux et traumatisant pour votre chien. Votre chien devrait finalement choisir de participer. Les photos Underwater Dogs sont basées sur le jeu de récupération, alors commencez avec un jouet sur terre, puis à la surface de l'eau, puis quelques centimètres en dessous. Si vous atteignez 10 pieds, vous vous en sortez plutôt bien, je dirais.
Et d'un point de vue technique ?
Assurez-vous d'avoir un caméra sous-marine avec flash pour éclairer ces expressions inestimables. Prenez beaucoup de photos. Et amusez-vous et n'oubliez pas de toujours faire des pauses et de laisser votre chien se reposer. Beaucoup de chiens aimentles activités aquatiques et vous ne voulez pas que le plaisir s'arrête.
Qu'espérez-vous que les gens retiennent de la lecture de ce livre ?
La joie : tout le monde aime les chiots ! Mais aussi la sécurité aquatique. Chaque année, des milliers d'animaux domestiques se noient dans des piscines de jardin aux États-Unis parce que leurs compagnons humains n'ont pas pris les mesures de sécurité appropriées.
Ces terribles tragédies peuvent être évitées. Si vous êtes propriétaire d'une piscine ou si votre chien a accès à une piscine, veuillez prendre toutes les précautions nécessaires, y compris les alarmes, les sorties de piscine appropriées, la limitation de l'accès à la piscine et, surtout, apprendre à votre animal comment sortir de la piscine au cas où il choisirait d'y entrer ou tomberait accidentellement.
De plus, une piscine n'est pas un plan d'eau naturel, ce qui signifie que les animaux domestiques ne comprennent naturellement pas le concept. De nombreuses personnes supposent que leurs animaux n'iront pas dans la piscine ou refusent à leur chien le droit d'y aller et d'apprendre. Cette mentalité met directement votre chien en danger, car à un moment donné, votre chien se retrouvera dans cette piscine, et il est absolument essentiel qu'il soit préparé.
Enfin, n'oubliez pas qu'adopter un animal de compagnie est une excellente option. Je suis toujours choquée par le nombre de personnes qui achètent leur animal de compagnie. Vous pouvez trouver n'importe quel type de chien - chiot ou adulte, de race pure ou de race mixte - dans les refuges et les organisations de sauvetage. Il suffit de faire l'effort. Mon chien, Nala, est un magnifique et affectueux mini-Labradoodleavec une personnalité incroyable (et une coiffure fantastique), et je l'ai adoptée au refuge.
