Ils ont été sauvés par un éleveur de Shar Pei de Hong Kong nommé Matgo Law, qui s'est tourné vers le monde entier et a demandé de l'aide. Le magazine Life a publié un numéro en janvier 1979 qui présentait un Shar Pei en couverture sur le thème des chiens rares. Une fois que le public américain a posé les yeux sur le Shar Pei, la demande de chiots a grimpé en flèche et le Shar Pei a été sauvé.

Reconnaissance officielle du Shar Pei
Le Shar Pei chinois a été officiellement reconnu par la Fédération Cynologique Internationale en 1981 et par l'United Kennel Club en 1985.
L'American Kennel Club (AKC) a été en retard par rapport aux autres clubs canins et n'a reconnu le Shar Pei qu'en 1992.

2. Le nom vient de la forme de la bouche.
Le nom Bone-Mouth vient du fait que ces Shar Pei ont la bouche « sèche », alors que le Meat-Mouth a une peau plus lâche et des rides autour de la bouche, il est donc considéré comme « plus charnu. »
Le Bone-Mouth est plus grand et plus mince et a beaucoup moins de rides sur le visage que le Meat-Mouth. Le Bone-Mouth présente généralement des rides le long des épaules, du cou et du front. La peau n’a pas l’air aussi lourde et lâche que sur la Meat-Mouth.

Tempérament
Le Shar Pei à bouche osseuse peut constituer un excellent animal de compagnie, mais il ne convient pas à tout le monde. Ces chiens peuvent être dévoués et protecteurs envers leur famille, mais sont également connus pour être têtus et indépendants d'esprit. Ils ont tendance à convenir mieux aux propriétaires de chiens expérimentés.
S'ils sont bien socialisés et élevés aux côtés d'autres animaux de compagnie, ils peuvent s'entendre avec eux, mais ils se méfient par ailleurs des autres chiens et des étrangers. Ils sont également connus pour devenir agressifs s'ils sentent qu'eux-mêmes ou leur famille sont menacés.

Le toilettage de la bouche en os est moins difficile que celui de la bouche en viande. Le Bone-Mouth a beaucoup moins de rides, il y a donc moins de nettoyage à faire entre les plis cutanés. Pour les deux types, une fois les plis cutanés nettoyés, il est impératif de bien les sécher.
Mais à part garder les plis propres et rester au courant du nettoyage et de la vérification de leurs oreilles ainsi que de la coupe des ongles et du nettoyage des dents habituels, les Shar Pei sont faciles à entretenir lorsqu'il s'agit de leurs besoins de toilettage.
Santé
Les Shar Pei à bouche de viande sont sujets à des conditions telles que l'entropion, c'est-à-dire lorsque la paupière se développe vers l'intérieur en raison des rides et des plis excessifs de la peau.
