Parfois appelé GSMD, le Grand Bouvier Suisse est une grande race originaire des Alpes suisses. Cette race de type Mastiff était populaire parmi les producteurs laitiers et les éleveurs de bétail dans les Alpes en raison de sa taille massive, de sa forte éthique de travail, de son empressement à faire plaisir et de son endurance impressionnante. Alors que la race était considérée comme éteinte au XIXe siècle, elle a été redécouverte et revigorée dans les années 1990. Avides de faire plaisir, fidèles et protecteurs, ce sont d'excellents chiens de garde pour les familles.

L'origine exacte de cette race suisse n'est pas connue, mais une théorie importante est qu'ils descendent de chiens de type Mastiff qui étaient les compagnons des légions romaines.
Une autre théorie est que cette race descendrait de chiens qui les Phéniciens l'avaient amené en Espagne, où se développèrent également les Grandes Pyrénées et le Mâtin espagnol. On pense que ces chiens ont fini par arriver en Suisse et ont joué un rôle dans le développement du Grand Bouvier Suisse.
Ces chiens et leurs ancêtres étaient utilisés pour le travail. Ceux qui étaient responsables de l'élevage du bétail ou de l'agriculture pour se nourrir et même les commerçants dans les rues dépendaient de cette race pour leur subsistance.
